Love doesn\u2019t always bring happiness.
\n<\/strong>Sometimes, love brings suffering too.<\/p>\n

Just like in the lyrics of \u201cPhotograph\u201d by Ed Sheeran:<\/p>\n

\u201cLoving can hurt<\/em>
\nLoving can hurt sometimes<\/em>
\nBut it\u2019s the only thing that I know<\/em>
\nWhen it gets hard<\/em>
\nYou know it can get hard sometimes<\/em>
\nIt is the only thing that makes us feel alive.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Buddhism teaches that where there is love, there is suffering.
\nThe more you love, the more you suffer.
\nLove less, suffer less.
\nNo love, no suffering.<\/p>\n

But why does life play this cruel joke on us?
\nWhy does it give us love\u2014both joy and pain\u2014at the same time?<\/p>\n

A lingering thought after Valentine\u2019s Day.<\/em><\/p>\n

The Perspective of Love in Buddhism<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In Buddhism, it is often said: \u201cLove is suffering<\/em>. The more you love, the more you suffer. If you love little, you suffer little. If you do not love at all, you do not suffer at all. Wherever there is love, there is suffering.\u201d<\/p>\n

This does not mean that people should not love one another. Rather, it teaches that love should be given purely, with goodwill and without attachment to emotions, physical appearance, tastes, scents, sounds, or personal desires. Loving-kindness (Metta) is also a form of love, one that is selfless and unconditional.<\/p>\n

The Four Types of Love in Buddhism (Piya\u1e45)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Buddhism categorizes love into four types:
\n1. Sineha \u2013 Love that arises from desire, passion, and infatuation.
\n2. Piya \u2013 Love based on instinct, such as familial love.
\n3. Pema \u2013 Love formed through deep bonds and mutual support.
\n4. Metta \u2013 Love cultivated through moral development, which is selfless and does not seek personal gain.<\/p>\n

The Nature of Love According to Buddhism<\/strong><\/p>\n

Buddhism teaches that love is:
\n\u2022 Impermanent (Anicca) \u2013 Love constantly changes; it is never the same.
\n\u2022 Suffering (Dukkha) \u2013 When change occurs, we struggle to accept it, leading to suffering. Also, separation from loved ones is inevitable and brings pain.
\n\u2022 Non-self (Anatta) \u2013 Love has no fixed self, as it is always changing.<\/p>\n

This leads to the profound Buddhist realization: \u201cThe only certainty in life is uncertainty.\u201d<\/p>\n

True Love is Not Coincidental<\/strong><\/p>\n

True love does not happen by mere chance. It must be built, nurtured, and sustained through mutual effort. It is not something magically bestowed by fate or divine beings.<\/p>\n

Buddhism teaches that love between a man and a woman arises from two causes:<\/strong><\/p>\n

1. Karmic connection from past lives \u2013 They were destined to be together due to shared merits from previous lives.<\/p>\n

2. Mutual support in the present life \u2013 They care for and help each other in meaningful ways.<\/p>\n

Either one or both of these factors contribute to the formation of love.<\/p>\n

The Four Qualities That Create a Lasting Love<\/strong><\/p>\n

For love to be enduring and meaningful, both individuals should share four key virtues:<\/p>\n

1. Faith (Saddha) \u2013 Mutual trust and belief in each other.
\n2. Morality (S\u012bla) \u2013 Ethical conduct and harmony in values.
\n3. Generosity (C\u0101ga) \u2013 Selflessness and willingness to give and support each other.
\n4. Wisdom (Pa\u00f1\u00f1\u0101) \u2013 A shared understanding of life and its deeper meanings.<\/p>\n

When two people embody these qualities, they respect and care for each other, viewing their partner with kindness and without the desire to control or dominate. Their love grows deeper over time, leading to a truly harmonious and fulfilling relationship.<\/p>\n

Such love is not just romantic love but a partnership of merit and virtue, much like the bond between Bodhisattvas and their devoted companions on the path to enlightenment.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
