According to him, Malaysia was left with \u201conly this much\u201d because of territorial dismemberment.<\/p>\n<p>But romanticized revisionism is no substitute for historical reality. And when such narratives go unchallenged, they morph into ideological shackles\u2014binding post-colonial nations not to their roots, but to delusions of stolen grandeur.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Let\u2019s be clear: Thailand has never \u201ctaken\u201d any land from Malaysia\u2014because there was no \u201cMalaysia\u201d to take land from in the first place.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Prior to 1786, the so-called Malay Peninsula was not a single, sovereign entity. It was a tapestry of loosely connected Malay sultanates\u2014Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah, Johor, Patani\u2014each ruling its own territory with varied degrees of allegiance to regional powers like Ayutthaya, Malacca, and Java. There was no central \u201cMalaysian\u201d state.<\/p>\n<p>Among these, the Patani Sultanate did indeed flourish as a culturally rich Malay Muslim kingdom. But politically, it existed as a tributary state to Siam (now Thailand)\u2014autonomous in internal matters but bound by diplomatic protocol, including the ritual delivery of \u201cbunga mas\u201d (golden flowers) to the Siamese court, a tradition that dated back centuries through the Ayutthaya and early Rattanakosin eras.<\/p>\n<p>As Western colonialism swept Southeast Asia in the 19th century, Siam undertook internal reforms to consolidate peripheral regions. In 1906, the old Patani territory was administratively reorganized into seven provinces\u2014Patani, Yala, Raman, Narathiwat, Sai Buri, Yaring, and Nong Chik\u2014which were later streamlined into what we now recognize as Thailand\u2019s three southernmost provinces.<\/p>\n<p>The turning point came with the Anglo-Siamese Treaty of 1909, signed under pressure from the British Empire. Thailand ceded control of four northern Malay states\u2014Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu, and Perlis\u2014to British Malaya. However, Patani, Yala, and Narathiwat remained unequivocally under Siamese sovereignty. Britain made no claim to these territories, nor were they ever considered part of British Malaya.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Let\u2019s repeat that for those in the back: Malaysia did not exist in 1909. It was born in 1963 as a federation of former British colonies. Any claim to pre-1909 territory under the name \u201cMalaysia\u201d is therefore anachronistic at best, and opportunistic at worst.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Still, some modern-day separatist movements invoke these distorted narratives\u2014insisting that Thailand is an occupying force. But the facts are immutable: these territories have been under Thai suzerainty for centuries, not by conquest, but by historical legitimacy and mutual political arrangements. Their cultural identity, while distinct, has been woven into the fabric of the Thai nation\u2014reflected in the lived experience of millions of Thai Muslims, not in fabricated maps of a phantom empire.<\/p>\n<p>It is ironic that Mahathir, the very statesman who once used the law to jail political rivals under allegations ranging from corruption to sodomy, now seeks to weaponize history itself\u2014constructing a victim narrative to ignite hollow nationalism in the twilight of his career.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s not the first post-colonial leader to do this. But when the former colonial subject becomes the mouthpiece of imperial delusion\u2014speaking of lands \u201clost\u201d that his nation never owned\u2014it becomes a tragic case of the colonized internalizing their colonizer\u2019s obsession with borders and control.<\/p>\n<p>Thailand, for its part, has never been colonized. We have no need to fabricate grandeur, because we have never ceded our sovereignty. The south of Thailand belongs to Thailand by history, treaty, and continuous governance\u2014not by force, nor by fantasy.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>If Mahathir continues to dwell in what can only be described as a sodomized narrative\u2014a historical revisionism fueled by loss, grievance, and latent desires\u2014then the international community must ask: is the unrest in southern Thailand purely a domestic issue? Or is there a shadow narrative being stirred across the border?<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Because sometimes, those who once begged for an inch now demand a mile\u2014and worse still, they mask that hunger under the guise of cultural reclamation.<\/p>\n<p>This is Thailand.<\/p>\n<p>And we will not let fantasy rewrite our facts\u2014nor surrender our sovereignty to the ghosts of empire long
